我要吃饭

From a Chinese viewpoint, the concept of food has for millennia been indivisibly associated with the region's most ancient cultivated staple – rice. In Chinese, 我要吃饭 *wŏ yào chīfàn*, which means 'I want to eat', literally means 'I want eat rice'. The 饭 *fàn* 'rice' component has become so deeply entrenched in the Chinese collective consciousness that it has become part and parcel of the generic concept of 'eating': while impossible to realise in the otherwise ideographic script (吃饭), the verb-object combination has come to be spelled out as one word in the Pīnyīn (romanised) form: *chīfàn*.
