Slovak neprijatel', Icelandic óvinur and Romanian inamic all denote an enemy – literally, a 'nonfriend'. A product of the troubled human mind known as the Collective Unconscious, enemy goes back through French ennemi to Latin inimicus, from in- 'non-' and amicus 'friend', as corroborated by the Romanian form, thus revealing – as everywhere else in the Universe – the intrinsically inamicable nature of the human spirit!
