Hebrew הִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ [hištaméš] 'to use' is a causative of שִׁמֵּשׁ [šiméš] 'to serve', cognate with שַׁמָּשׁ [šamáš] 'sexton', all going back to Aramaic ܫܰܡܶܫ [šaméš] to serve', from ܫܸܡܫܵܐ [šemšā] 'Sun', cognate with Hebrew שֶׁמֶשׁ [šēmeš] 'Sun' and Arabic شَمْس [šáms]. The first service had been rendered to the Sun.
